What actions will you take in this new year to make a difference?
Time for reflecting
For me, 2022 was a year of significant change. After 36 years of being an employee, I launched Fox Philanthropic Advisors, charting my own course to make a meaningful difference in the world. The experience has been one of steering the ship while building it. We experienced some choppy water here and there, but happily, we have remained on course!
With so much to do for my business, I still hadn’t dealt with the boxes of personal files from my old office. In the quiet of late December, I finally took the time to go through them.
There was a lot of paper that went right into the shredder. I must admit, though — seeing my career through thirty-plus years of articles, presentations, notes from colleagues, and even old performance appraisals was a bit emotional. What to keep? What is most practical in this chapter of my professional life? What holds significance?
It was a time for reflection on a topic we might all consider in this new year.
What is important?
Actions with intention
Spending some time with that question and actually naming what is most important to us is the first step to meaningful action. If your family is at the top of the list, will you set aside time every week – maybe every day – to give them your undivided attention? Is your health in the top three? If so, you might consider improvements in your diet and exercise habits.
And if your community or your faith or the environment or global health or education or gender and racial equity are on the list, what actions will you take in this new year to make a difference? How will you decide?
Naming what is most important to us is the first step to meaningful action.
If you’re not sure, let’s talk. It’s totally free and will take just a few minutes of your time. And you never know; I may just be able to help.
After all, your intentions are worth keeping.
May the new year be fulfilling in all the ways that are important to you.
